the Influence of Thyroidectomy on Alimentary Glycosuria

نویسنده

چکیده

1. Removal of the thyroid glands causes a rise in the assimilation limit for dextrose. 2. If the parathyroids are left, this result is permanent. 3. The thyroids probably inhibit normally the direct combustion of the sugar in the muscles.

the Relations of the Thyroid Glands to Glycosuria

1. After thyroidectomy the glycosuria, produced by ether or adrenalin in the normal animal, is greatly reduced. 2. Thyroidless dogs fed on powdered thyroid glands show a return of glycosuria more or less proportional to the amount ingested when treated with adrenalin or ether. 3. As the thyroids regenerate the ether or adrenalin glycosuria increases similarly. The results of these experiments l...

Influence of thyroidectomy on postoperative serum calcium level regarding serum vitamin D status. A prospective study

Background: Hypocalcemia is a well-recognized complication after total thyroidectomy. Hypovitaminosis D may have additional effect in the development of hypocalcemia. This study aimed to determine the effect of total thyroidectomy on postoperative serum calcium in patients with and without hypovitaminosis D. Methods: This prospective study was performed on patients who underwent total...

The Influence of Thyroidectomy, Splenectomy, Gonadectomy, and Suprarenalectomy upon the Development of Experimental Atherosclerosis in Rabbits

Alimentary hypercholesterolemia acting over a sufficient period of time (in rabbits with all organs intact, 110 days or longer) causes deposition of cholesterol within the intima of the aorta. Deposition of cholesterol within the intima of the aorta initiates the formation of experimental atheromata. Thyroidectomy, splenectomy, and gonadectomy augment hypercholesterolemia and thereby facilitate...

Glycosuria and Allied Conditions

work on the subject. Glycosuria is essentially a chemical problem and should primarily be attached from a chemical point of view. The book begins with a discussion of the properties and pli3'siology of the carbohydrates, and methods for their detection are full}7 described. Experimental glycosuria is well dealt with and the author believes that the pancreas is concerned with the metabolism of s...

The determination of glucose tolerance.

One of the earliest examinations of the response of the human organism to the administration of sugar was made by Worm-Muller (1884), who published observations on the alimentary glycosuria of two healthy men. He found that these subjects, after being for some time on a diet very low in carbohydrate, showed a detectable glycosuria when given 50 gm. of glucose or sucrose or 100 gm. of lactose. T...
